AR+VR Weekly: VR shipments down 33.7%, Unity behind two-thirds of AR+VR content & AWE & Digi-Capital join forces

It’s been another busy week in AR+VR! In addition to keeping you up-to-date on the top AR+VR news, funding activity, and launch announcements, here are there three stories you need to know: VR shipments down 33.7%, Unity behind two-thirds of AR+VR content and AWE & Digi-Capital join forces.

IDC’s latest report shows worldwide VR shipments saw a 33.7% drop in Q2 of 2018 which they believe is more a correction based from last year’s numbers which were “artificially propped up” by cheaper mobile-dependent VR devices. The same report showed standalone VR headsets grew 417.7% during the quarter thanks to Oculus and Xiamoi headsets.

Meanwhile, Unity’s CEO John Riccitiello stated at an event in San Francisco that around two-thirds of all VR and AR applications were built inside the Unity Engine.

Finally, XR giants AWE & Digi-Capital have joined forces to bring AR & VR data and analytics to the XR community. This official partnership sees the launch of a joint survey which will produce four annual XR reports specific to the USA, Europe, China and Israel regions.
